Fearless Leadership

I had an experience with a large organization last week which indicated once more how investing in employee development is crucial but often forgotten. The product I had purchased left a lot to be desired and I expressed my dissatisfaction, pointing to the specific and offering information about making it more user friendly. The manager of the department did not listen. Instead, she argued and tried to show that I was wrong. I left and remembered how this particular organization has come under fire in the recent months and how it could benefit by teaching it's managers some good customer service. But even in that outfit, the encounter could have ended very differently. If the manager had higher confidence, she would not have felt personally attacked and she would have been open to the suggestion. She definitely would not have tried to prove me, the client, wrong.

Do you get defensive? Do you take things personally? Do you often get mad, angry? Do you often feel criticized? There is a good chance that your Inner Critic is running the show. Great managers and leaders are self-aware and don't let the personal run their professional life.
